Leader in Me (LiM) Principles

The LiM was the result of work with global educators to develop a whole-school improvement model in the form of a leadership school, which provides a framework with key practices to empower students to learn leadership and apply their skills in real life.

At the heart of the LiM is the 7 Habits.  The model relies on external facilitators and staff mentors being familiar with learning the habits first, in order to effectively teach and model the habits to the students, thereby adopting an Inside-Out Approach.

The habits come to life for the students, becoming part of them, as they engage in experiential learning, project-based activities and leadership opportunities.  When students are empowered to actually apply their learning in class, school-wide, in the community and at home, they develop genuine leadership skills and competencies, which are aligned to social-emotional learning skills.

The habits are taught in age-appropriate ways to grow students as leaders who can lead self, then lead others.  The culture of the school nurtures student voice and choice, supported by a caring physical and emotional environment, and a common leadership language that communicates the worth and potential of every child.  As a result, leadership becomes a lasting habit in every child throughout the school.

7 Habits

1.        Be Proactive - change starts with me: responsibility, initiative, self-control, self-management

2.       Begin with the end in mind: purpose and vision, self-awareness, goal setting, planning,   reflection, self-management

3.       Put first things first - work first then play: prioritisation, time management, organisation, planning, follow-through, self-management, accountability

4.      Think win-win - everybody benefits: respect, courage, consideration, conflict management, fairness, problem-solving

5.       Seek first to understand, then to be understood: empathetic listening, honesty, trust, openness, public speaking

6.      Synergise - we are better together: valuing diversity, collaboration, teamwork, creative thinking, imagination, problem-solving

7.       Sharpen the saw: renewal, life balance, contribution, continual learning, growth-minded
